This video briefly goes over the process of mediation. Mediation is one of the newest processes of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and it’s a powerful tool in making sure your child’s education meets your standards. If you disagree with your child’s school regarding some part of your child’s education, you can ask to enter mediation at any time.
A trained mediator will be a part of all mediation procedures, and these mediators are also trained to understand issues surrounding special education. Different mediators will conduct meetings differently (some will have the you and the school in the same room during mediation, some won’t), but they all have the same goal: to have you and the school district and you agree on a course of action for your child. Of course, all formal mediation is reviewed by the state to ensure you have not waived any of your civil rights in the process.
