Legal Aid of Nebraska Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC)
Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) represents low-income individuals in disputes with the Internal Revenue Service. Examples of disputes may include but are not limited to topics such as audits, appeals, collection matters, and federal tax litigation. Our LITC can also help taxpayers respond to IRS notices and correct account problems. We provide education for low-income taxpayers and taxpayers who speak English as a second language (ESL) about their taxpayer rights and responsibilities. Our LITC does not prepare or file tax returns. Tax-related services are free for eligible taxpayers. Although LITC’s receive grants from the IRS, LITCs, their employees, and their volunteers are not part of the Federal government.
The mission of LITCs is to ensure the fairness and integrity of the tax system by educating low income taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities, by providing pro bono representation to taxpayers in tax disputes with the IRS, by conducting outreach and education to taxpayers who speak English as a second language, and by identifying and advocating for issues that impact low-income taxpayers.
