There is a lot of misconception that surrounds juvenile records.  Many, not just in Nebraska, but also around the nation believe that their juvenile record goes >poof< when they turn 18 or 19.  Unfortunately, this is not so, and to make it more complicated every state has different sealing laws when it comes to juvenile records.

Here in Nebraska, there is even more confusion, as some places and reports indicate that juvenile records are automatically sealed.  This is definitely not the case and in the alternative Nebraska is one of a small number of states that allows a large portion of your juvenile record to be seen by the public unless it is sealed.  This would mean that for the duration of the adjudication and probation, the public could have access to your juvenile record.

This is why it is recommended that you get your record checked!  Have you been trying with no luck to apply for better employment?  Have you been denied housing?  Your record could be a part of the reason that you are being held back from obtaining that better job or a nicer apartment.

If you are in Nebraska, under 24, and have had some touch with the Juvenile Justice System (such as an arrest or adjudication) you can apply for assistance by emailing, juvenilereentry@legalaidofnebraska.org.

We also have monthly Record Check Clinics in Lincoln and Omaha!  If you qualify under the Juvenile Reentry Project, we can check to see what is on your record!
